Hello, welcome to Teaching In Afghanistan!

We are the Kelly’s from Boulder, Colorado. Jimmie is in service in Jalalabad, working with Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT’s) and I am Kathy, his devoted spouse of 30+ years. I am currently finishing up a degree in Religious Studies from the University of Colorado. I plan to join Jimmie in a few weeks and serve as an teacher (we’ll see in what capacity pans out).

Specifically, when I went looking for information about Afghan-centric teaching methods, I found very little. I found some from well-intentioned Western-centric organizations such as UNICEF and USAid, but little about what Afghan educators recommend for a teacher dealing with a cross-cultural environment.

The purpose of this blog is to create a space for more information, resources and especially dialogue from those around the globe who have experienced teaching in Afghanistan (especially you Afghan teachers…help!).

Please let us know what worked well, what didn’t. What challenges did you face? What problems do you foresee with cross-cultural methods? What recommendations do you have for those of us who want to engage in a re-emerging education system?

As the Tao Te Ching states:
“The Way of Heaven is the Help without Harming
The Way of the Sage is to Act without Struggling”

We look forward to hearing from you!

I am so thankful to have foudn this site. I am actually trying to write a paper for my ESL class on teaching EFL in Afghanistan (my choice topic). However, the resources are few and far between! It is my ultimate goal to teach in Afghanistan and your blog has been so inspirational. Please contact me with any information you feel would help me, either with my paper or my goal to teach in Afghanistan.

    Blessings,

    Tiffany Parker
